Siemens’ smart app to connect Expo 2020 Dubai to IoT

Siemens has said that it has developed a new app which will support Expo 2020 Dubai to enhance visitor experience and reduce energy and water use during the six-month event. The app which runs on MindSphere, Siemens’ open, cloud-based operating system has already connected part of the site’s infrastructure to the Internet of Things (IoT).

Currently under development, the app will collect, monitor, correlate and analyse data from the site and visualise it to allow real-time monitoring and control of infrastructure from static and mobile devices. To begin with, the app will operate across two domains- environmental monitoring and irrigation, Siemens said.

The technology giant added that in addition to environmental monitoring and irrigation, further domains will be added in subsequent phases including sustainability, electric vehicle charging monitoring, and other data lake use cases, incorporating multiple smart city elements into the single app.

Dr Roland Busch, chief operating officer and chief technology officer at Siemens AG, said: “This new digital application will support Expo 2020 Dubai in becoming the most connected world fair in history; a great step forward as we continue to explore how digitalization and IoT technologies can address urban challenges.”

“By integrating the infrastructure of the largest-ever event in the Arab world with the Internet of Things, we have the potential to inform the development of future smart cities around the world.”

Mohammed Alhashmi, chief technology officer at Expo 2020 Dubai said that this app by Siemens is the perfect example of what the expo is trying to achieve- a test bed for the expo’s partners to deploy innovation at scale and explore the potential for new technology.

According to the statement from Siemens, the app will grow with the Expo 2020 Dubai to incorporate the ability to make use of machine learning and artificial intelligence to support predictions. The company stated that once the app has enough historical data from sensors, it can construct a model for learning and make predictions.

Siemens also added that being the Infrastructure Digitalisation Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai, it is implementing one of the world’s largest installations of its digital building technologies at the site.
