The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) launched a new project to install solar parking systems which generate electricity, under the Shams Dubai initiative, at Dewa headquarters and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
Dewa indicated the project comes as part of its efforts to increase reliance on clean energy and support the transformation of the city of Dubai to a smart city, achieving its vision to be a globally innovative and sustainable city.
According to Dewa, work is ongoing on the implementation of the project, which aims to install electricity generators using the PV panels connected to its network in 902 parking lots at both locations.
The production capacity of the solar systems in Dewa building is reported to reach 1,780 Kilowatts and 220 Kilowatts in the ministry’s building with a total of 2000 Kilowatts in both locations, resulting in annual reduction of 1,500 tons of carbon emissions.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director of Dewa said, “The project comes as part of our efforts to encourage the public to benefit from the Shams Dubai initiative, aiming to support the Dubai Smart Initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest and most promising city in the world. It also aims to achieve the goals of Dubai Clean Energy 2050 to make Dubai a world centre for clean energy and green economy, through providing 7% of Dubai’s total clean energy by 2020, 25% By 2030, and 75% by 2050. “
“Reducing the carbon footprint in Dubai and the UAE is a national duty and we must cooperate to protect the environment and conserve its natural resources to achieve Sheikh Mohammed’s vision of continuing the sustainable development efforts, achieving balance between economic, social and environmental development and the implementation of sustainable environmental initiatives and programmes in Dubai and the UAE,” Al Tayer added.
He said,” Dewa has linked its network through Shams Dubai initiative, with 450 residential and commercial buildings with a total capacity of about 17.7 Megawatts. The authority works to double the number in the future to cover all buildings in the emirate by 2030.”
