UAE Ranked Among Top Countries for Adoption of Autonomous Vehicles

The U.A.E has ranked eighth globally for readiness to accommodate driverless vehicles, according to a new study.

Audit firm KPMG revealed in their Autonomous Vehicles Readiness Index (AVRI) that the U.A.E ranked ahead of South Korea and New Zealand. The index measures the best global practices to help countries accelerate their adoption of autonomous transport, capacity for adapting autonomous driving technology, and the progress achieved in making driverless cars a reality.

The findings come as the U.A.E’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the signing of an MoU with the Sustainable City Project for the operation of autonomous vehicles within the facilities of the project situated in Dubai Land starting February 2018.

“The MoU underscores RTA’s commitment to engage in partnerships with public and private sectors to realize its strategic, smart mobility objectives,” said Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, Deputy Chairman of the Autonomous Vehicles Committee. “It reflects the cooperation and partnership between the RTA and Sustainable City and supports the Smart City initiative as well as our government directives to transform 25% of public transport means into driverless transit modes by 2030.”

The agreement is part of the Dubai Autonomous Transport Strategy, which is expected to bring AED 22 billion in annual economic revenues.

The Netherlands, which ranked the top in the index, achieved high numbers in all four categories of policy and legislation, technology and innovation, infrastructure, and consumer acceptance. The U.A.E ranked sixth in the category of policy and legislation.

The development of driverless cars has also been undertaken by software developers Acacus Technologies, the company that is helping RTA to transform fleets of Dubai Taxi to driverless cars through their software Lynx.
